Mitchell's Birth Story

I remember being so excited to be pregnant with my first child. The whole pregnancy was easy and I didn't gain much weight. We knew he was a boy. We decided that we needed to find out because not knowing makes me have that "wait for Christmas" anxiety. I just can't wait! What will Santa bring? Nope! Too much for me to handle so we found out with each of our kids.

Mitch had 2 due dates. November 21st and 22nd. Not a huge discrepency but I was told both days several times. I went in to the doctor on the morning of the 21st and since that was the first of the due dates and I was already dialated to a 3, my doctor decided to strip my membranes (ouch!) to see what would happen. He told me to come back at 5pm to check. I walked around all day not feeling any different. Nothing was happening so I thought it didn't work. I was all ready. My mother was there to help, Scott had taken the whole Thanksgiving week off and the baby's room was stocked.

At 5pm we went back to the doc's to be checked. I got up into those LOVELY stirrups and readied myself for more stripping and pain. The doc asked me several times if I leaked anything, was I sure nothing leaked, did I feel pain, any contractions, and really? No leaking? Really...I hadn't leaked anything and didn't feel a thing the whole day. So the doc gently pushed up on what was Mitch's head and amazingly a whole lot of stuff came gushing out! My water had broke but Mitch's head was plugging it all up!

Luckily the doc's office is right across the parking lot from the hospital so he padded me up and sent me over. He said the walk will help things along - so my Mom and I walked while Scott left to get my bag, make some phone calls and change into his "labor clothes".

We got to the hospital, got checked in, Scott came back and we settled down for our long night of labor. This being my first child I was shy and didn't want my Mom in the room so she went home for a nap then came back and sat in the hall knitting till the baby came. She didn't complain once and was very understanding. Seems kinda mean now that I think about it but I was young!

Labor was normal, they gave me my epidural pretty quick so I really don't remember any real pain! What I remember most is the itching...constant, never ending itching. At last, at 3:50am (that's A.M. - still dark morning time) Mitch made his arrival. I did push for a while because with the epidural I couldn't quite figure out what muscles to push with. They did get the "salad spoons" out to ease his head out and the rest was easy!

We waited till morning (the sunny morning) to name him. We knew his middle name would be Scott - tradition in Scott's family to give first son's the middle name of their father's first name. We just needed to find a name that complimented it. Something Scott Jorgensen. We did have a short list...Preston, Austin, Zackary and Mitchell. While videotaping, Scott asked what my favorite of those were and I said Mitchell...Scott said, "There you have it...Mitchell Scott Jorgensen!" and our baby had a name.

He was a good baby. No colick, no spitting up too much, no allergies - a healthy baby boy! My main complaint with him was that he would not take a pacifier. If he was inconsolable the only thing that would console him was me and my udders. It was such a problem that when I was playing volleyball with my friends at the church it would interfere with my play time. I hated sitting on the sidelines so I trained myself to nurse while playing. I was pretty good! Hold him with my left arm while making plays with my right!

Mitchell's head was so cute. Perfectly round and kinda big. A line from the movie "So I Married and Axe Murderer" described it to a T..."Orange on a toothpick!" He finally grew into his head right around age 7 or 8.

I'm so glad that Scott wore his "labor clothes." Wouldn't have wanted him in something indecent...

I love the So I Married an Axe Murderer line. That is in my top ten favorite movies. (I'm not admitting why. My reason is pretty stupid... but I do love that movie.)

Welcome udder-addicted Mitchell Scott Jorgensen! Glad you came!

The labor clothes were worn first at Mitch's birth...then the EXACT same outfit was worn at each of the other kids' births. He kept the outfit in a safe place till we knew we were done!
